THE OPPOSITE OF 'STIMULOUS'

I've been waiting with baited breath for this week's U.S. unemployment figures to come in. A lot is at stake for the Obama Administration. One of the first acts of office that Barack performed was pushing the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It cost the taxpayers of this country an unbelievable sum of $787 billion. At the time President Obama told us it was an important piece of legislation to stem the unemployment problem. In fact, he claimed it would create 4.1 million jobs. Without it, we were warned, unemployment would soon be over 8%. With it, it is now 10% and we have lost an estimated 3.3 million jobs.

Every since I was a little kid, I have been taught, by Liberals, that the government can create jobs in the public sector and improve the standard of living for all Americans. They have always based their theory on the success (?) of Franklin D. Roosevelt after the Great Depression. The Work Programs that FDR produced, they claim, brought us out of the Depression and lead to the largest expansion of wealth and growth in the history of the U.S.. I have always been a sceptic of this idea, however, I left the possibility open in my mind that they may be right. I now believe that they are dead wrong.

Maybe it's the way that they have applied it that is the real problem.

FDR created his Work Progress Administration at a time when unemployment in the U.S. was at an all time high. Therefore, there was very little displacement of work from the private sector. Furthermore, FDR had as the centerpiece of his programs....WORK. The only exception was his establishment of Unemployment Insurance in 1935, which at least went to people willing to work. The Obama Administration seems to be more obsessed with giving money away than making people work for it. In Detroit, for example, money was literally handed out to people required only to prove need and stand in line. (Watch the video!) Other money was handed out to people for buying cars, or houses. More money was funnelled into State coffers to fill in budget gaps. The one thing no one was required to do to get the money, was work for it.

The end result?

We have now registered the second biggest job loss in the history of Labor statistics going all the way back to 1948. The #1 biggest? 2008, by only 1/10 of a percent. We have now lost an additional 2.3% of our workforce in just 2009 alone. Add to that a shrinking dollar, looming inflation and stagnant wages and it's very hard to see what we got for our $787 billion.

However, I should note that Wall Street had one of it's best years ever! Yea for the rich getting richer while the working class increase their debt.

Now, I have said that I would give the Obama Administration 2 years to turn this recession around (it did, after all, take Reagan that long.). And I stand by that statement. But when you say, as Obama did, that $787 billion would stem unemployment, create jobs and save the working man. You had better come through. So far all I have seen is the situation get worse and worse for the average guy-on-the-streets while Wall Street is running off with the money. It cost us a hell of a lot, but at least one Liberal lie is being put to rest in my mind-that you can turn the economy around by throwing money at it. Obviously, that didn't work. We already know that tax cuts for the wealthy can help, but how about this untried approach, Mr. President? Tax cuts for the Middle Class. The people you've so far only tried to burden even more. ^^^^ Jeez... HC, 'they' have found you. And now THEY are out to distroy your efforts by buring your blog in SPAM.

I'm just going to keep recycling that oldie but goodie: 'It's the economy, STUPID!' (Where's that sickly vermin Carville at?) Oh, never mind, I didn't watch him back in the 90's.

Jobs. Wow. What is a J...O...B? Because the MSM and the Politicians seems to have their own idea what a JOB is. Which isn't my idea of a JOB.

I read a very interesting article (The permanent temporary workforce) that echoed my exact observations from the previous decade: Employers don't create 'jobs'. They create time slots for workers.

On call, temporary, seasonal, part time, interim: Whatever you want to call them. They aren't JOBs in my opinion.

A JOB is something you go to everyday.

A JOB is only a 'true' JOB, for the purpose of my rant, if it's fulltime (normally considered to be 40 hours a week). Not Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday one week. And Friday, Sunday the next. For a total of 40 hours over two weeks. And then you don't work for six days, until 'they need you'. Creating part time work and politically bantering it as JOB creation is a crock.

A JOB is something that you have a reasonable expectation of being able to support yourself or yourself and dependents with the income you recieve.

A JOB is something that you have a reasonable expectation of being employed at, until that time comes when you can find a better JOB.

I know of NO ONE that can suport themselves on the income from most part time jobs. Quick math: 30 hours a week (if lucky) at $10 per = $300. Take The Guvments (and Jenny's) share out of that and you're probably left with a tad over $200. That's $800 a month. To pay rent. To pay utilities. To buy groceries, clothes, and gasoline. And let's not forget those 'little things' like auto/health insurance. Or what happens when you need to get something (like your car) fixed. If it can be done, whoever is doing it, needs to write a survival manual.

Until the business/political climate changes, we, our children, and our children's children, will be faced with what has become 'JOBs' in this country.

I really feel 'stimulated'.

Must be all those potholes that haven't been patched using that $800B of my kid's, my grandkids, and my future earnings from all these JOBs.

On a side note, did you happen to notice that KIA is opening a plant in Georgia? With most of Flint and other areas in SE Michigan littered with boarded up auto plants, thousands of experienced auto workers on permanent layoffs, and Jenny taking countless trips at Michigan taxpayer expense to Asia: The Koreans chose Georgia.

Sorry, I'm returning control of your blog back to you (and the bastard spam machines).

Hey Hack,
Damn, your comment was longer than my post! Lol. You make a lot of good points, though. I assume you mean the article in Businessweek (recommended reading!) showing the easily dispensable woman on the front. I read that too. It was right on point. Something needs to be done or this is going to be the trend of the future. I wonder how the new Health Care program is going to impact the hiring by these companies? If they are required to supply Health Care to their full time employees, are we just going to see more part timers? I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the final mess looks like. I read that the average hours worked by workers on the site of one of Hollywood's movies here in Michigan (another of Buffy the Job Slayer's brilliant solutions) was only 28 hours total. Is this their vision of the future?? I'm very concerned about the future and what it holds for our young workers (your and my grandchildren) large debt? Huge taxes? Part Time jobs?? Doesn't sound like a great future to me.

As far as these spammers:
I could write a whole piece (which I will) on just the problems I've had with Google, Youtube, Blogspot, etc. I had my radio interview with Jered Townsend (the guy with the gun on the Youtube debates) pulled by Youtube several times and all my tags removed. I've been banned from several political sites for opposing Gay Marriage. My last Blog site was sold out from underneath me to a porn site!!! Now the spammers and my .com sold without my notification (I'm working on that one right now) I'm so small, I don't understand why they devote so much effort to me. Thanks for you thoughts! Sometimes I want to just pack it in, but I refuse to let them win!

"...I'm so small, I don't understand why they devote so much effort to me."

Because they fear you. Or what you profess. Sometime the truth doesn't set you free, but rather makes you the subject of relentless attacks. Or perhaps it's just lousey software...

Anyway, you're not making a difference unless you get banned from a few sites. (The 2k equivalent of ruffling a few feathers.)

Sorry... I'll now return to my present JOB, which will most likely be transformed into what the state considers to be a job.
