Free Speech Frank

Hello everyone. O.K. , O.K. I know I said I was done. The hardest part about coming back is that I feel like I'm not being "A Man of My Word". I like to be a person you can trust, who says something and stands behind it. Good or Bad. But, I have so much I want to tell you that I'm about to burst at the seams. The elections are coming up and issues of free speech and personal liberties are everywhere and even though I still feel my chances of influencing anyone are slim, I have to try. So, as an opening piece I'm running this old clip of Frank Zappa on "Crossfire". (It don't get any stranger than this!) Frank brings up some great issues on censorship and it falls in line with how I feel. Enjoy and think.

that was fairly bizarre. john lofton was a perfect example of the inability to conduct civil discourse. the man couldn't let anyone with an opposing opinion get a sentence out without jumping all over it and trying to shout them down.

zappa was reasoned and generally self controlled even though he was under attack. i found it weird that he avoided eye contact though. agree or disagree though he appealed to reason not inflamed rhetoric.

Hi Lime,
It doesn't get more bizarre than Frank on Crossfire. I agree, Frank comes off as being the controlled, reasoned person and the rest of them look like they're embarrassed that Frank's making good points. I thought it was appropriate to run this on the anniversity of Frank's death (today-Dec. 4) Which also happens to be my birthday. Frank is a bit of a hero to me, because he always appealed to reason and not bumpersticker statements and even if you disagreed with him, he still made you think. It's good to see you still around, Lime.

Now to actually address your post: One of the problems with free speech is that the concept often creates a revolving door. Zappa says it's his right to produce the songs he does. Lofton counters that by saying that it's HIS right to push for censorship. Now, we're on your site exercising OUR rights to talk about how idiotic Lofton is. Everyone who touts the first amendment tends to think it only applies to them and their own ideologies.

The fact is: the first amendment protects us from attacks from the government (whomever they may be); not from each other.

I enjoyed that video. I cant stand people like the lofton guy. I am all for tolerance but jeez, let people talk.

See Hippie? You've got two and half people (Lime and Aldo; plus half of me) agreeing with you. No need to go around with your head down, kicking up rocks, threatening to end your blog, and complaining about how nobody wants to play with you.

Sheesh.

Hey Dre,
That's right, you win (dammit).

Hey Dre #2,
"Everyone who touts the First Amendment tends to think it only applies to them and their own ideologies." How true my friend. It also applies to tolerance, a lot of people don't understand that true tolerance is tolerating people you DON'T agree with. (A lesson even 'ol H.C. needs to remember every once in a while)

Hey Dre #3,
I never kicked no rocks.

Hey AjbendaƱa,
"Frank 1 Crazies 0"
I couldn't agree more on your scoring. You know it must have driven those pompous bastards nuts to have their ass handed to them by someone like Zappa. Obviously a case of underestimating your opponent. R.I.P Frank

Sorry my previous comment was to terrible for your fragile eyes. J/k

Seriously.....
If any form of music, artist, writer, television show, etc.- has more of an influence on the child than the parent, then that parent has failed miserably.

The world can sometimes be a shitty place. Educate your children, prepare them for the injustices that happen everyday. Sheltering your children from negative concepts by removing them from music or tv does not aid them in adult life. It only gives them an inacurate perspective of the real world.

Nice clip h.c

Man this world is messed up, we need to take care of it, we all neet to stand together as one, like we all are anyways and we need to start getting more people involved in saving our world and standing up for our rights and turn to the more natural, spiritual side of life.
